SBS PhD researcher wins prize in Images of Research competition

Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship PhD researcher Nasreen Hasan has been awarded a prize in the University of Strathclyde’s Images of Research competition.

Images of Research is an annual competition, sponsored by Jessops, open to academics, researchers and PhD students conducting research at the University of Strathclyde. This year, the theme was Exploring the Unseen.

Entrants are challenged to create an image and a short piece of text representing their research, with shortlisted entries going on to form a touring exhibition that takes in public venues and events across Scotland.

Nasreen won in the "Societal Spark" category in the competition, with her award presented to her by Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Jim McDonald. This category centres on showcasing how research and innovation can bring about positive, real-world impact and tackle societal challenges.

Nasreen’s image entitled ‘Empowering the Feminine Spirit’ illustrates her research into the significant impact of entrepreneurship in empowering women from non-western contexts, which leads to a shift in societal norms.

She said, “I was delighted to hear I had won a prize in this year’s Images of Research. With my image, I wanted to highlight how the presence of challenging cultural norms and limited access to resources makes the establishment of supportive networks and inclusive policies so important to ensure the continued growth and sustainability of female entrepreneurship.

“I initially found it challenging to find a model, photographer, and setup that would represent my idea. However, with the use of AI and some accompanying tools, it became feasible to convey the exact concept in mind and turn it into reality.”

All entries can be viewed in the Learning and Teaching Building until May 10 and then, for the first time, can be found at Glasgow Central Station between May 27 – June 10, and will form part of the Glasgow Science Festival.

More information about this year’s competition can be found on the Images of Research webpage: https://new-og.is.strath.ac.uk/workwithus/publicengagement/publicevents/imagesofresearch/2024/ and there is still time to vote in the People’s Choice award.
