FRIL funding award for satellite data research

Dr Steven Owens, Senior AI Lead in Earth Intelligence Finance, Financial Regulation Innovation Lab (FRIL), and Department of Accounting and Finance, has secured funding from the Scottish Government to further collaborate with University College Dublin.

The five month project - “Reaching New Heights: Strengthening the Scotland Ireland Partnership with Satellite Data” - explores how satellite data can drive sustainability and climate resilience in Scotland and Ireland.

Focusing on net-zero targets, community resilience, and academic collaboration, it will bring together key researchers from the University of Strathclyde and University College Dublin.

The project culminates in a workshop where the concepts developed over the course of the project will be pitched to relevant stakeholders. Feedback will be used to finalise the concepts. Beyond the project, these concepts will be developed into funding proposals for programmes such as Horizon Europe, strengthening cross-border partnerships and supporting sustainable development in both nations.

Steve is also part of the Applied Space Technology Lab and, with an engineering background, is focusing on the link between satellite data, AI and financial regulations as part of FRIL and the Applied Space Technology Lab.
