Professor elected as Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Professor Colin Lindsay, Department of Work, Employment and Organisation and Depute Director of the Scottish Centre for Employment Research (SCER) at Strathclyde Business School, has been made a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

The Academy of Social Sciences has welcomed 64 outstanding social scientists to the Fellowship this spring, with expertise spanning a range of research and practice areas including health inequalities, the gender wage gap, European cybersecurity governance, AI and big data analytics, and the anthropology of Britain.

Professor Lindsay said, "I'm delighted to have been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. I look forward to working with other Fellows and the Academy to champion high quality research and advocate for the power of social science to contribute to a better society."

Professor Lindsay's research interests include: public management reform; HRM and employment relations in the public sector; new governance in public policy; policy evaluation; employability, skills and access to training; experiences of low-skilled work; and approaches to promoting equality in the workplace. With the Scottish Centre for Employment Research (SCER), he has been involved in conducting research with colleagues on issues such as workplace innovation and fair work. He has conducted research for the UK Commission for Employment and Skills; the Scottish Government; the Scottish TUC; and the European Commission. His current research focuses on the link between health and employability; and the impact of new technology on employees’ experiences of job quality.

The newly elected Fellows highlight the importance, breadth and relevance of the social sciences to understanding and tackling the varied challenges facing society today. As well as excellence in research and applied professional use of social science, the new Fellows have also made significant contributions beyond the academy, including to industry, policy and higher education.

Will Hutton FAcSS, President of the Academy, said, “I’m delighted to welcome these 64 outstanding social scientists to the Academy’s Fellowship, whose research and practice are helping to develop solutions to pressing societal issues. From informing decision-making around environmental challenges and encouraging entrepreneurial growth to improving planning systems and tackling educational inequalities, their insights, skills and understanding are delivering positive impact to improve our daily lives.”

The Academy’s Fellowship comprises 1,600 leading social scientists from academia, the public, private and third sectors. Fellows’ expertise covers the breadth of the social sciences, and their practice and research addresses some of the major challenges facing communities, society, places and economies. All Academy Fellows are elected for their excellence in their fields and their substantial contributions to social science for public benefit. Selection is through an independent peer review which recognises their excellence and impact.

The new Fellows have been elected from 32 UK organisations, comprising 28 Higher Education Institutions, as well as think tanks, non-profits and business, and overseas institutions.
