Department of Accounting and Finance celebrates Ofgem mentoring partnership success

Strathclyde Business School's Department of Accounting and Finance has been working with Ofgem, the GB energy regulator, to deliver a Mentoring Programme designed to help students plan and prepare for the transition into their professional careers since October 2023. Over the past two years, 18 accounting and finance students have been given 20 hours of career-focused support with a nominated Ofgem mentor, preparing them for the world of work.

The students involved in the programme for academic year 2024/25 were invited to a social event at the Ofgem Glasgow office to celebrate the success of the programme. Both students and their mentors shared their mentoring experiences, while senior Ofgem staff and Professor Andrew Marshall of the Department of Accounting and Finance gave speeches on the role and importance of mentoring. They also thanked all the Ofgem mentors and the administration staff in Accounting and Finance for the hard work in getting this programme started.

The programme continues to be a success, and the department looks forward to continuing their partnership with Ofgem in the coming year. The next run of the Mentoring Programme will begin over the coming months and will allow more accounting and finance students the opportunity to prepare for their future careers with the guidance of an Ofgem mentor.

Professor Andrew Marshall, Department of Accounting & Finance, said, “The mentoring partnership between Ofgem and the University of Strathclyde Business School has proven to be a resounding success, providing invaluable business and life guidance to over 20 students over the last two years. This collaboration has been particularly significant given Ofgem's substantial presence in Glasgow, where the energy regulator maintains a major office and plays a vital role in the city's economy.

"As the programme enters its third year, it continues to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, equipping Strathclyde students with real-world insights and career development support from industry experts. We want to thank the mentors for their time, generosity, and honesty. And thanks also go to our Strathclyde students for stepping up, being curious, and making the most of the opportunity.”

Vandana Narang, Operations Manager at Ofgem, added, "The programme supports Ofgem's commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, particularly in light of how the programme is open to all but also how we hope the programme can help build confidence from an inclusion point/assisting mobility for those accessing University from backgrounds where they may feel less confident than their peers about going into the workplace. The programme is enthusiastically championed by our Senior Leaders in Ofgem.

"I am proud that we successfully launched the programme in Glasgow in 2023 and expanded our Career Mentoring Partnership Programme by adding the prestigious University of Strathclyde to our Portfolio of Universities. We are now in our second year of the programme and have successfully mentored 18 students. We were delighted to host an event at our offices in Glasgow on October 22 where we celebrated the success of our mentoring programme with all the mentors and mentees."

"The University of Strathclyde is a prestigious University in Glasgow and, considering that Ofgem has a strong presence in Glasgow, we are hoping to raise the profile of both Ofgem and the wider GB Civil Service for students as they consider potential future career paths.”
