SBS academic awarded British Academy research grant
Dr Brian Garvey, Department of Work, Employment and Organisation, has been awarded a grant of £295,000 for a 24 month research project from the British Academy's International Interdisciplinary Research Projects 2026.
The International Interdisciplinary Research Projects programme aims to support projects which engage with questions concerning the relationship between expertise, public understanding and policy delivery internationally, and highlight the importance of collaboration between communities of practice, disciplines, capacities and borders.
Entitled "Porous boundaries of forest system transgovernance: territory and tribulation in the Amazon", the project integrates local indigenous scientific knowledge, law, anthropology and space observation to investigate how Amazonian territorial, conservation and protective boundaries are permeated by both illegal invasion and a reconfiguration of existing laws; how market-oriented transnational forest agreements may facilitate rather than combat illegal extraction; and how strengthening the self-protective measures of the indigenous residents alongside innovation in territorial governance, legal practice and public policy formation offers sustained solutions to a critical planetary challenge.
