SBS ranked 1st in Scotland and 6th in the UK for Research Income

Strathclyde Business School (SBS) has been ranked 1st in Scotland and 6th in the UK for Business & Management research income, according to the Chartered Association of Business Schools’ analysis of HESA data.

Between 2021/22 and 2023/24, SBS secured £11.46 million in research income, reflecting its continued success in attracting competitive research funding. This places Strathclyde ahead of many Russell Group universities and firmly among the UK’s leading business schools.

The results also show that research income in Business & Management is highly concentrated, with the UK’s top ten institutions accounting for 41% of total research income in the discipline. SBS’s position within this group highlights the scale, competitiveness and national standing of research activity across the School.

This achievement reinforces SBS’s contribution to Scotland’s strength in Business & Management research and underlines the School’s growing profile within the UK research funding landscape.

Professor David Hillier, Associate Principal and Executive Dean of Strathclyde Business School, commended the academic team’s commitment to research that is both innovative and impactful. “Our position as top in Scotland and sixth in the UK reflects our commitment to collaborative, cross-disciplinary research. Our academics regularly partner with institutions across the UK and internationally - as well as with public and private organisations - to conduct research that delivers real-world impact, as this report demonstrates.”

Professor John Quigley, Vice Dean (Research), said, “This ranking underlines the strength of our partnerships and the relevance of our research to business and society. Our success in attracting external funding reflects the trust placed in us by our partners and funders to address complex challenges. We are proud that this work not only drives innovation and impact, but also feeds directly into the learning experience we offer at Strathclyde.”
