Project involving SBS academics shortlisted for award

A project involving Strathclyde Business School (SBS) academics has been shortlisted for the Advanced Maritime Technology International Awards 2026 in the category “Vessel Charging Innovation of the Year”.

HYPOBATT was an EU-funded programme with 18 partners from 10 different countries working on the shore side and the ship side by developing two full modular multi-MW recharging systems in two European ports with fast turnaround times of battery electric ships and easy charging of larger on-board batteries. The programme aimed to reduce the carbon footprint of marine transportation with electrification.

The SBS team - Professor Lesley Walls (Department of Management Science); Professor Matthew Revie (Department of Management Science); Dr Stathis Tapinos (Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, Strategy and Innovation) - worked on evaluation of new business models for hyper vessel chargers considering future development and energy infrastructure at the ports.

This nomination recognises the innovative work carried out within HYPOBATT towards developing and demonstrating automated multi-megawatt charging solutions for zero-emission maritime transport.

Being acknowledged alongside leading international maritime innovations is a great honour for the entire consortium and highlights the growing importance of high-power charging technologies for the future of sustainable shipping.

The award ceremony will take place during the Advanced Maritime Technology Expo 2026.

The EU-wide pilot project, with a duration of 42 months and funded with 9.35 MEur under the HORIZON 2020 initiative, aims to advance the electrification of ships. Strathclyde is one of the 18 partners from 10 different European countries that make up the HYPOBATT consortium.
