The Economics Department is offering a number of scholarships to candidates who can impress them with their essay on an issue surrounding global energy.
The global energy system is facing complex challenges in the 21st century. Meeting the energy demands of rising populations and avoiding the risks of serious climate change will require significant levels of innovation in energy supply and efficiency.
The GEM essay scholarship competition provides an opportunity for students to reflect on how these challenges might be addressed and what opportunities and implications they may have for sustainable energy use.
There are three potential scholarships of £5,000 each for the candidates who impress the most. Applicants will be asked to write an essay on one of three topics of pressing importance to the global energy challenge:
1 Should China constrain its demand for world energy resources? How could this be achieved and what would be the impacts?
2 Are peak oil and its forecast impacts myths?
3 Is renewable energy the best way to meet the requirements of a growing world population?
Submissions format:
Information about the winning essay(s) and the author will be announced on the GEM website.
NOTE: This scholarship is only open to students who take up a place on the GEM MSc degree in the academic year 2012/13
