PhD Students from the Department of Management Science played an active part in SCOR 2012, the biennial Student Conference on Operational Research, which was held at Nottingham University in April.
The aim of the SCOR conference is to provide PhD students who are in the early stages of their operational research careers with an opportunity to present their work in a friendly environment. Presenters are also invited to submit a paper on their work to be published electronically as part of the SCOR proceedings.
Three Strathclyde students gave presentations in the conference. Magdalena Gajdosz presented her work on "Modelling the impact of human and organisational factors on the safety risk over time”. Shona Blair spoke about her research on "Empirical Bayes Methods for Discrete Event Simulation Performance Measure Estimation” and her paper has since been accepted to be published in the conference proceedings. The runner-up prize for best presentation was awarded to Carolyn Booker, a third year PhD student in the Department of Management Science, for her talk on "Performance measurement and trade-offs in UK higher education institutions”.
In addition, Magdalena Gajdosz had a pivotal role on the organising committee, arranging the review and selection of abstracts from over 80 international submissions from 18 countries and the review and selection of papers to be published in the conference proceedings.
Grant Allan (Fraser of Allander Institute, Department of Economics) gave an invited presentation to the 3rd Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre (HMRC) forum on the economics of marine renewable energy, organised by HMRC, University College Cork, on April 19. This event brought together world-leading researchers to showcase the latest academic work in this new and expanding field.
Grant demonstrated some of the ways in which regional and national economic models, developed in the FAI through a number of externally funded research projects, had been used to evaluate the potential impacts of marine renewable technologies.
He discussed how these models can be used to understand the impacts of construction and operational expenditures of these devices, and also to show how – by taking an ownership stake in a project – the returns to the local economy could be substantially greater than would otherwise be achieved.
Grant’s research on the economics of marine renewables continues through ClimateXChange – the Scottish government’s centre of expertise on climate change.
