Knowledge Exchange Week Event at Management Science department

The Department of Management Science hosted their inaugural networking event on May 3 which gave the opportunity for both alumni and Knowledge Exchange participants to enjoy a reception at the Centre for Corporate Connections.  Good weather allowed guests to mingle on the external balcony.

With representatives attending from a wide range of organisations including Morgan Stanley, Standard Life Investments, Deloitte, NHS, M&Co, SIMUL8, Standard Life and PricewaterhouseCoopers, it provided the department with an ideal opportunity to develop relationships which will be leveraged in the future for student recruitment, dissertation hosting, research, guest lectures and consultancy.

Management Science would like to extend thanks to all who attended, especially to Laura Wardrop from the Centre for Corporate Connections who hosted the event.

Rolls Royce Recruitment Event

The Department of Management Science welcomed Robert Graham (Head of Supply Chain) from Rolls Royce in East Kilbride where he gave a presentation on May 3 to ten Management Science students with regards to working in his division. The following week he was engaged in interviewing a good number of the department’s students.

Of the people he met, six took part in a final round of interviews on May 21. Mr Graham provided feedback to the department after the first round of interviews expressing how impressed he was with the quality of students he met and how he believes that the Department of Management Science will become one of his main talent pipelines over the coming years.

Of the six students that attended the final interview, one student has already accepted a permanent role in the supply chain division at a salary 25% greater than she expected. Another three have been placed in the Rolls Royce talent pool with an expectation that formal job offers will be forthcoming over the summer.

On the strength of success achieved so far the exercise will be held again next semester giving Mr Graham access to a whole new group of students.

Martin Brooks, Management Science Department, said, "The Department of Management Science is naturally very pleased with the feedback from Rolls Royce. It gives us a great sense of pride to be able to satisfy the demand for talent from our local partners while also assisting our students to achieve well paid, professional roles with Glasgow based, respected blue-chip companies before they have even graduated. The fact we can utilise the relationships that exist in the department to the benefit of both our students and our external partners is a win-win for all concerned.”

New intake of MBA students in Oman

The CEO of Bank Dhofar in Oman, Anthony Mahoney, presided over the inauguration ceremony of the new batch of MBA students enrolling on the Strathclyde MBA programme in Oman on April 26.

Mr Mahoney shared his experience with the participants and urged them to rise up the management ladder with determination. To reach the top, he said, you have to be an outstanding performer, accept opportunities and challenges offered, be confident, seek guidance with humility from all the involved stakeholders, deliver good value, and work with commitment and with the team.

Dr Jayaram Nayar, Director of Postgraduate Studies and Research at the College of Banking and Financial Studies, which runs the MBA, said that what differentiated CBFS in Oman was its emphasis on quality building among students. Dr Nayar pointed out that since 2000, over 225 students have obtained the Strathclyde MBA, with a further 182 students enrolled on the MBA programme.

He also announced that the MSc in Finance programme from Strathclyde Business School will be offered via the Centre.
