First year Hunter Centre PhD student presents sole-authored paper at top international research conference

This year's premier international entrepreneurship research conference, Babcock College Research conference (BCERC) organised by Babson College, took place in Fort Worth, Texas, at Texas Christian University. Among the 350 entrepreneurship scholars attending were three staff and students from the Hunter Centre.

Dominic Chalmers shared his work on entrepreneurial orientation in the social context and Sergio Costa presented a paper written with professors Jonathan Levie (Hunter Centre) and Mark Hart (Aston University) and fellow PhD student Ekaterina (Kate) Murzacheva. A third paper was co-authored by Dr Nina Rosenbusch (Hunter Centre). Kate Murzacheva also presented her sole-authored paper on investments in new businesses by family and friends of start-up entrepreneurs in England, using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) UK project, coordinated by her supervisor Professor Levie.

Kate said of her experience, "It was really fascinating. I put a lot of effort into preparing the paper: refining of the idea, data analysis, writing, and presentation rehearsals. But the presentation itself passed so quickly, that I can hardly remember what happened! I found that the most beneficial things only start after you get out of the session room. Talking, questioning, sometimes arguing over ideas, meeting new people, meeting the greatest scholars that you cite in your own research – that makes you grow and see the standards you need to reach."

International Accounting and Finance Doctoral Symposium at Strathclyde

The International Accounting and Finance Doctoral Symposium (IAFDS) took place from June 19-21 at the business school. There were 22 doctoral students attending, with six of those being Strathclyde students.

This is the fifth Symposium and focused on developing the research strengths and skills of doctoral students. The Symposium offers an excellent opportunity for students to present their work to an international audience outside their usual University environment.

Each student received a full briefing and discussion of their paper by an experienced academic.
