Invited speaker at Monash Business School in Kuala Lumpur

As invited speaker, Dr Aliakbar Jafari of the Department of Marketing delivered a talk at the Islamic Business Symposium held at Monash Business School’s Sunway Campus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in September. Addressing marketing academics and professionals, Dr Jafari criticised the rising exaggerations about ‘Islamic’ markets and marketing. He further analysed the key reasons for the emergence of what is nowadays referred to as ‘Islamic Marketing’.

Dr Jafari emphasised that, from an Islamic perspective, enhancing the status of marketing theory and practice (for common good) in contemporary society needs a systemic analysis of macro factors that shape contemporary market contents and structures. He also called for engagement with the extant interdisciplinary literatures that critically evaluate the ‘value maximisation’ debate in marketing theory and practice.
