The Department of Human Resource Management specifically and, therefore, Strathclyde Business School and the University of Strathclyde, generally, have been accepted in principle into Associate Membership of the Global Labour University (GLU) an initiative sponsored by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The GLU is an international collaboration of universities and departments that specialise in labour studies and employment relations and organises a number of Masters programmes. The academic partners are as follows:
The acceptance of Strathclyde by the Global Labour University followed annual visits since 2008 by Professor Phil Taylor to the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai, India, where he has given guest lectures. Strathclyde's application to membership of the GLU was supported and sponsored by Professor Sharit Bhowmik, the Dean of the School of Management and Labour Studies at TISS. The first concrete step in realising the participation of Strathclyde will see staff in the department assist in the supervision of one or two students from the Masters programme in Globalisation and Labour at TISS when they have placements with UK trade unions. Professor Taylor has secured the agreement of Unite the Union to sponsor a student annually in the sum of £2,000.
