Yorkhill benefits from students' Value Challenge

First year students from the Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice class run as part of the BA Business Enterprise offered by the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, took part in the 'Value Challenge' and raised funds for Yorkhill Children's Charity in the process.

Dr Paul Ferri is the class co-ordinator and explained that Value Challenge is one of the group activities the class offers and involves groups of students starting a business from scratch with no more than £20 in seed capital.

"Building on the Hunter Centre's ethos of emphasising the need for students to 'experience entrepreneurship', the Value Challenge – a key assignment in the first year ETP class - is intended to introduce students to the practice of entrepreneurship. The students study entrepreneurship theories early in the semester and then get a chance to put these theories into practice via the challenge. The feedback so far from the students is positive, with many telling me how much they enjoyed trying their hands at starting and running a business.”

Some of the activities of the other groups included selling picture frames, gift cards, flowers, printed t-shirts, offering car washing as well as translation and proof reading services.

The winning team organised a 5-a-side football tournament and offered pizzas to the winners which they secured FOC from the local Pizza Hut outlet in George Street. They charged a team entry fee which was the main source of their income less costs.

This year's cohort of just over 200 students raised £2550.03 for their nominated charity Yorkhill Children's Charity. Dr Ferri added, "This was a fantastic effort. Professor Sara Carter presented each of the winners with a certificate of achievement along with a cinema voucher to the value of £15. She congratulated all the students who took part and was full of praise for the winning group too."

There was a presentation to the winning group of students who raised the most out of all the groups The winning team was Louise Sinclair, Stuart Mawhinney, Ismael Jimenez Fernadez and Carlos Revilla Portero (Louise and Stuart were absent from the presentation) with a total raised of £313.00.
