Marketing Society Scotland Awards 2013

Third year marketing student at SBS, Amanda Mcfadden, was named Marketing Student of the Year in the Marketing Society Awards 2013.

The Awards recognise marketing talent and case studies that set standards for the industry and aim to demonstrate the world class marketing community in Scotland.

The Marketing department's Professor Alan Wilson interviewed the top six performing students in the January diet of exams with the aim of putting one of them forward for the award. The students then had to write an essay explaining why she should be put forward for the Marketing Star Award and based on this and the interview, Professor Wilson chose Amanda and one other student to go forward for the Marketing Star Award.

Next step was an 'Apprentice-style' day in Edinburgh where Amanda completed four group marketing tasks and presented them to a panel of senior marketers. At the end of the day she had a panel interview along with 15 other students from universities across Scotland. Based on that day’s performance, five were selected for the shortlist and got to attend the awards night at the Old Fruit Market in Glasgow.

"The awards night was amazing!" said Amanda. "I had the opportunity to network with a wide variety of marketing professionals and the hospitality was lovely. I had no idea I was the winner until they announced my name on the night. Initially, I was in complete shock but, as the night went on, it started to sink in. Getting to the shortlist itself was a great accomplishment but to actually win was just amazing."

She added, "The prize for winning the award is a three month paid internship with Maxxium UK and I'm really excited to get started with them!"

Professor Alan Wilson said, "Amanda has performed exceptionally well and she is a very good ambassador for the Marketing Department and Strathclyde Business School."
