A group of students from the undergraduate Hospitality and Tourism Management programme took on the task of organising the department's graduation ball and fundraised for the Yorkhill Hospital Children's Charity at the same time.
Dr Kostas Tomazos (department of Strategy and Organisation, formerly Department of Management) said, "For the second year running our students showed their generosity and sensitivity undertaking fundraising for the Yorkhill Hospital Children's Charity. The organising committee of the fourth year graduation ball, with help from the department, did the university proud by raising over one thousand pounds through their raffle and fundraising. The representative from the supported charity Dr Jairam Sastry (Consultant Paediatric Oncologist) delivered a speech on the evening praising the students for their commitment and help for the last two years. Besides the fundraising the evening at the Science Centre was a great success and everybody had a great time while helping a good cause."
Cindy Cosgrove, who was part of the organising committee said, "After months of planning and organising June 6 quickly came around. A group of us decided back in semester one that we would take on the task of organising our department's grad ball...and what a task it was!
"Students from International Business; Hospitality and Tourism Management; Management; Human Resource Management; and Business Enterprise got together and brainstormed on what we wanted from the evening. There was a lot of pressure on us hospitality students - if we couldn't plan a ball then who could! We chose a night at the Glasgow Science Centre with the ceilidh band Kilter for entertainment. Not only did we want a night celebrating that we all got through the last four years but we also wanted to give back to a local charity. Our chosen charity was the Schiehallion ward at Yorkhill Childrens Hospital. Dr Jairam Sastry, Consultant Paediatric Oncologist at Yorkhill, came along at the beginning of the evening and said a few words on how the money raised would benefit the charity.
"The Yorkhill Children's Charity provides and supports excellence in paediatric, obstetric and neonatal healthcare enhancing the treatments, care and wellbeing of children and their families. Their driving passion is to fund any initiative that helps to save or improve the life of a child and by association positively affect the lives of their family. We spoke to a lot of local businesses and managed to get our hands on over 20 fantastic raffle prizes including a 5 star overnight stay, a bungee jump and a helicopter ride. We are still finalising the total amount raised but at the moment we're looking at over £1000. This is an amazing amount of money and something we are all very proud of. It's fantastic to see all the hard work pay off and see others benefit from it too.
"We have to say many thanks to Strathclyde Business School for generously supporting us as without them the evening wouldn't have been such a success. Thank you also to Microsoft for their sponsorship on the evening which helped provide the entertainment. Additionally, thanks to the lecturers that were in attendance, in particular Kostas and Leanne for all their help and support in the run up to the night and in drawing the raffle. It was great to see everything come together and it was the perfect end to our time at Strathclyde."
