Dr Harry Sminia, Strathclyde Business School's Professor of Strategic Management, will be at SBS's Dubai campus on Monday September 30 at 7:00pm on the Dubai campus for a participative evening talk as he addresses a fascinating question with both theoretical and practical relevance: Can a firm change the environment?
On the Strathclyde MBA, EIBE (Exploring the International Business Environment) affords us an outside-in view to strategy, shedding light on the importance of considering environmental influences outside our control while developing and assessing organisational strategy. But are environmental factors necessarily outside of organisational control?
Dr Sminia's evening talk will focus on an area of his current research that shakes up traditional conceptual frameworks by exploring how an individual firm's relationship to its surrounding environment can actually be a two-way street. In what real-life circumstances can organisations strategically influence their environments, what are the practical benefits of considering this possibility in the strategy process, and what do these findings mean for existing academic strategy models?

Dr Harry Sminia - Strathclyde Professor of Strategic Management
Before joining Strathclyde in 2013, Harry held positions at the University of Groningen, the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam and the University of Sheffield. His research interests are in the area of processes of strategy formation, strategic change, and competitive positioning. Dr Sminia has done research on how a top management team activity actually affects the strategic direction of a firm, how organisations change, how industries develop, but also how crucial things that take place within an industry remain unaltered over a period of time despite a strong impetus for change. He is also interested in process research methods and methodology. Dr Sminia is happy to supervise PhD students who – like him – are interested in finding out about 'how' questions in the broad area of strategic management.
