Dr Stuart McIntyre, a lecturer in the Department of Economics, won joint 2nd prize in the prestigious Epainos conference paper competition at the recent European Regional Science Association conference in Palermo, Italy.
The paper award is open to scholars from across the world who are under the age of 33, and who present their work at the annual conference. The paper Stuart presented was titled: 'Personal indebtedness, community characteristics and theft crime'; a discussion paper will be available through the department website soon.
Professor Dennis Nickson (HRM) was an invited speaker for a Thematic Session on 'Beauty and Capital: The Sociology of Appearance' at the American Sociological Association Annual Conference, the major sociological conference in America, which was held in New York last month.
He presented on August 13 alongside former Strathclyde colleague Professor Chris Warhurst on "Beauty and the Beast: The Dark Side of Aesthetic Labour". As a result of the thematic session there is likely to be a special issue from a leading American sociological journal.
Professor Tom Baum has been invited by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (formerly Burma) to discuss approaches the development of tourism and hospitality programmes at TVET and university level. Myanmar is the emerging tourism destination in Asia and is faced with major capacity and capability constraints in meeting the rapidly growing demand from visitors from the region and further afield. Professor Baum participated in workshops and discussions in Yangon (Rangoon), Nay Pyi Taw (the new national capital) and Mandalay and focused on the role that HRD, including education and training, can play in the creation of a competitive international destination.
This visit to Myanmar completes an 'ASEAN flush' for Professor Baum who has now undertaken research, teaching or related professional activities in all ten ASEAN countries, starting with Singapore some 25 years ago.
