The Management Consultancy Society, set up last year to support students interested in a career in consulting and currently run by Honours-year students from Strathclyde Business School Alastair Lumsden and Kevin Krebs, played host to Aleksandra Surowiec, a technology solutions specialist from IBM on November 21.
Aleksandra was a postgraduate researcher in Biomedical Engineering (Orthopaedics) at Strathclyde from September 2011 to November 2012. She completed her undergraduate in Biomedical and Life Science-Anatomy at the University of Glasgow. She has been with IBM for nine months and went in through the Graduate Programme pathway. She has been been given increased responsibility and now works with clients who are interested in the new FlashSystem data processing system.
The event attracted 60 attendees from across the university. There was a mixture of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including MBA. The diversity of the audience is something to be noted, with students represented from across all disciplines.
Aleksandra spoke about the recruitment process with IBM and shared tips about how she was able to develop her application and secure an offer. She also shared insights about how IBM is structured, shared insights into some of the exciting projects she has worked on and the impact she has made. She reached out to the students to offer support and participated in a 20 minute Q&A session.
Last semester the Management Consultancy Society had consultant Alastair Wyllie work with Strathclyde students to give an insight into what it is like to work on international projects, with multiple clients and stakeholders, and into the consulting process. As a consultant who contributed to the Yemen LNG - the country's largest-ever industrial investment, budgeted at around $4.5 billion - this was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about consulting, network and have their questions answered.
Alastair said, "We are looking to develop the society, so would welcome anybody interested - staff or students - who might like to contribute to get in touch."
