Iberdrola MBA in the Global Energy Industry

The 27 participants on the MBA in the Global Energy Industry, a customised programme for Iberdrola, delivered by the Centre for Corporate Connections, Strathclyde Business School, in partnership with Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, undertook their 9th session to date this October. This was dedicated to two topics, namely Finance and Financial Management, taught by David Hillier and Corporate Governance co-taught by Margaret Stewart (Strathclyde Business School) and Paloma Bilbao (Comillas).

The session was opened by Lindsey Murie, Senior Organisational Capability Consultant, Scottish Power, who welcomed the participants who travel from across the globe including UK, Spain, USA, Mexico and Brazil to attend their sessions, taught alternatively in Glasgow and Madrid. The Finance and Financial Management session included two senior managers from Iberdrola, namely Javier Urquidi, Treasury & Financing Manager and Jose Angel Omaechebarria, Investment Manager, who delivered guest speaker presentations to the group, providing the company context to the theoretical elements of the course.

The week long session then continued on to the area of Corporate Governance, a topic crucial to a multi-national such as Iberdrola, operating in many different markets. This topic included the three crucial areas of Corporate Governance, Internal Audit and Compliance & Ethics. At the outset of the class Senior Executive Iñigo Elorriaga, Director of Corporate Governance in Iberdrola opened the session and provided participants with an overview of the topic within the company. This comprehensive lecture set the scene for the remainder of the class which also had contributions from Allan Fyffe, Internal Audit and Juliet Farquhar, Compliance & Ethics, both from Scottish Power.

As part of the on-going development of this customised MBA, Gema Gongorra Bachiller, Group Head of HR Development for the programme in Iberdrola also visited Strathclyde Business School to meet with Elaine Collinson, Programme Director (SBS), Marta Muñiz and Andres Ramos (Programme Directors, Comillas) and Robert Robinson, Director of ICADE Business School (Comillas) in preparation for the second cohort of participants due to commence in February 2015 in Madrid.

Elaine Collinson, programme director, said, "Strathclyde Business School is delighted to be planning for the next cohort of participants from across the Iberdrola group to join the group next year. Working in close collaboration with our partners in Comillas Pontifical University, we have successfully developed an exciting, challenging and customised programme for the client. The two cohorts will be taught together in Madrid in February 2015, with a total of 54 participants enrolled.
