The Institute for Future Cities works to improve the quality of human life in cities across the world. It does this through research and partnerships with commercial organisations, local and national government, from multidisciplinary areas and from all over the world.
There are only a few weeks left in which to visit the City Observatory 'taster' exhibition. The City Observatory installation showcases the power of urban data analytics and consists of screens with interactive city data visualisations, as well as an animated projection showing data 'in the clouds'. It introduces the City Observatory project, one element of the £24 million TSB-funded Future City Demonstrator in Glasgow.
The installation is located on the 6th floor viewing platform of the Lighthouse, Mitchell Lane, Glasgow, and is open until December 20, 2014.
The Institute welcomes its new PhD researcher, Jack Fawcett, who will be exploring the ethics of big data. Jack's research is jointly funded and supervised by Capita and the University of Strathclyde and forms part of the Institute for Future Cities' curriculum, fulfilling its mission to integrate and catalyse expertise and research across sectors and multiple disciplines.
Jack has a background in Political Sciences and Philosophy. This perspective will contribute to his study of the ethical implications of collecting, storing and analysing big data in the urban context. In partnership with Capita, the aim is to better understand the human response to the big data use, and the effect this might have in relation to individual privacy, security and integrity.
His supervisors are Dr Robert Rogerson from University of Strathclyde and Dr Neil Mackin from Capita.
