Professor Dennis Nickson from the Department of Human Resource Management has recently been appointed to two prestigious roles outside of the University. He has been invited to become a Quality Assurance (QA) Panel Member for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the professional association for the HR profession. As a QA Panel Member Professor Nickson will support CIPD’s role as an accrediting body for postgraduate provision in human resource management across the UK and internationally.
Professor Nickson has also been appointed as the external examiner for the Doctorate in Social Science by Distance Learning, which is hosted in the Department of Management at the University of Leicester.
Strathclyde Business School entered into a new 2+2 articulation agreement with SAIT (South Alberta Institute of Technology) last year for the undergraduate Hospitality and Tourism Management programme.
The students complete their Diploma over two years at the institution in Canada and are encouraged to complete their degree. They can either do so within Canada or choose to travel overseas.
A Transfer Options Fair was offered on November 13 in Calgary and Lesley Nixon attended the event on behalf of the University to speak with students and encourage them to apply to the Faculty.
Strathclyde Business School has two other overseas articulation agreements with Harbin Engineering University in China and The Strathclyde China Institute; the latter being a joint initiative between the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Strathclyde Business School.
Dr Julia Smith, of the Department of Accounting & Finance, has been appointed a Research Assessor for the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland. This is a new initiative, aimed at assisting the trust in selecting candidates for Research Incentive Grants and Collaborative Research Grants.
Carnegie Research Assessors are recruited from within the Scottish academic community and represent the different areas of research undertaken in Scotland. They are selected on the basis of their expertise in reviewing and their in-depth knowledge of their subject field. Some are previous grant holders of the Carnegie Trust, others are, or have been, reviewers for the Research Councils, or for other funding bodies such as the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Dr Smith's initial tenure, which is renewable, is for three years.
Grant Allan (Economics and Fraser of Allander Institute) presented at the 61st North American Regional Science Council conference in Washington D.C. on November 14.
With over 800 delegates, this is the largest and most prestigious meeting of regional science academics in the world. Grant presented on “The impacts of temporary and anticipated tourism spending” which is joint research with Patrizio Lecca and Kim Swales (both Economics and Fraser of Allander Institute).
Dr Aliakbar Jafari of the Department of Marketing has been appointed to the Editorial Board of Journal of Marketing Management, a 3* journal recognised for its international excellence in the field.
Emeritus Professor Richard Butler was the invited keynote presenter at a UNWTO conference on Managing Seasonality in Tourism held in Tirana, Albania on October 20. Following the conference he accompanied the Minister for Urban Development and Tourism and the Secretary General of UNWTO on a day long visit to archaeological sites in southern Albania as a guest of the Albanian government.
Strathclyde Business School welcomed social enterprise Connections, and Martin Hunt from Tartan Silk Public Relations for a PR Workshop on November 11.
Talking to a group of business leaders and entrepreneurs as well as some of our MBA and Postgraduate students, Martin gave an insight into the world of media management with examples of campaigns that he has run in locations as diverse as Moscow, Paris, New York and throughout the UK.
One recent campaign that he managed was the opinion poll for the Referendum based on the sale of cupcakes which resulted in a media frenzy on the day before polling.
Martin entertained the audience with stories of how he entered PR which was triggered by celebrity management. His experience encompassed crisis management, product launches, radio, television and print campaigns as well as utilising the benefits of social media.
