Strathclyde's entrepreneurial culture recognised

The University of Strathclyde's entrepreneurial culture has been recognised in an award made by the organisers of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW).

The University has received a High Impact Badge of Honour for the Celebration of Enterprise Week it staged to coincide with the international event, in which more than 140 nations participated. GEW is held annually to celebrate "the innovators and job creators who launch start-ups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare".

Strathclyde staged more than 20 events during its own programme, including workshops, information seminars, competitions and social events. The week was launched with the presentation of the Strathclyde People award - for alumni who continue to play an active and productive role in the University's work - to Craig Taylor, Managing Director of IT company Cojengo.

The University was also named as one of the top ten GEW UK partners.

Event organisers were required to meet four of six criteria to receive a Badge of Honour:

Strathclyde met all six of the criteria in the course of Celebration of Enterprise Week.

Hosts of events included Strathclyde's Research & Knowledge Exchange Services, Careers Services, Alumni & Development, Strathclyde Business School's Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Glasgow-based angel syndicate GabrielInvestments.

Eleanor MacKay, Enterprise Co-ordinator with Strathclyde Entrepreneurial Network (SEN), had responsibility for organising Celebration of Enterprise Week. She said, "Celebration of Enterprise week was a huge success and a great opportunity to highlight the work of SEN.

"We concentrated a wide range of activities into a week but this is something we do all year, every year. SEN is a collaborative network bringing together the University’s academic and professional services to support students, academics, researchers and alumni at every step of their entrepreneurial journey. We are proud to receive the High Impact Badge of Honour and of the achievements which helped us to earn it."

Strathclyde was named Entrepreneurial University of the Year in the 2013 Times Higher Education Awards
