Alumni networking events a success

Thanks to funding from the Alumni and Development team, Strathclyde Business School and the Careers Service recently worked in collaboration to host two alumni networking events. Students had the opportunity to quiz some SBS alumni on their career paths and what it’s really like to work in their chosen field after graduating from the Business School.

The first event, held on February 24, was for third and fourth year Marketing undergraduate and postgraduate students, who heard from companies including Jura Single Malt, Scottish Rugby Union, Diageo, Equator and Celtic Football Club.

One student commented, "By attending this careers session I now have a better understanding of the different career paths available in Marketing. It gave me a chance to hear what previous graduates are doing now including alumni from the Saltire Foundation, Diageo, Jura Single Malt, Events Ecosse and Equator. I was also able to learn more about the recruitment processes of some of these companies and the different skills and experiences that they look for in graduates. At the end of the session, there was also a chance to network with the alumni which enabled me to find out how to gain the relevant experience during my time at university and how to get the most out of my degree. I will use the knowledge gained from this session to help me gain the relevant experience I need and develop some skills needed for a career in Marketing."

The second event welcomed alumni and students from various disciplines including HRM, Management Science, Economics, and Accounting and Finance with representation from Aldi, PwC, Balfour Beatty, Swipii, OLO Eyewear, CGA Strategy and Maggies Centres.

One of the students who attended said, "This has made me realise that having a degree in whatever (business) discipline can open up so many opportunities."

Sandra Wright, Careers Adviser to the Business School, said, "These events were the first of their kind that we’ve held for the Business School and proved to be very successful. Without the support of the Alumni and Development team, we wouldn’t have been able to host such an enjoyable event which our students have clearly benefitted from, enhancing their overall experience here at Strathclyde. We were delighted to welcome back alumni to the campus with many saying it was their first time on Strathclyde soil since they graduated so the events proved a highlight for all involved!"
