Strathclyde Business School was lucky enough to welcome Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland and Lead Manager, Sports Development at sportscotland on April 29 to the Technology and Innovation Centre.
Michael gave a compelling presentation on his experiences in the lead up to, and during, the most successful Commonwealth Games ever, using a selection of poignant images from the Games to bring his message to life.
He spoke about some challenging moments during the planning process where he highlighted the importance of always staying true to yourself and the original brief. At the forefront of his mind, in every decision he made regarding the Games, were the athletes themselves. Sometimes it took strength and courage to question or support decisions but ultimately, if it was right for the athletes then this is what guided Michael.
Throughout his presentation, it was clear just how passionate Michael was about the Games and the importance of supporting the athletes at every stage. He ended with a short video which summed up the Games and let those of us in Glasgow, who experienced the electric atmosphere, relive some of the most memorable moments from July 2014.
Heather Lawrence, Business Improvement Manager at the University of Strathclyde and part-time MBA student said, "I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about Michael Cavanagh's experiences of organising Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. It was fantastic to learn about his leadership approach and that despite the competing demands and political pressures, he never lost sight of the athletes or the people at the heart of it. He stayed true to himself which I found very inspirational. Michael's use of visuals from the Games to support his story was heartfelt and engaging, and brought a tear to my eye more than once."
Attendees also had the chance to feel like a real winner by trying on one of the coveted medals from the Games as well as seeing one of the commemorative quaichs given to medal winners. It was a privilege to hear from Michael and we look forward to welcoming him back to the campus soon.
