Dr Matthew Alexander, Dr Derek Bryce and Dr Samantha Murdy (Marketing department) were successful in attracting a funded PhD studentship from the Academy of Arts and Humanities (AHRC). The studentship is a collaborative doctoral award and will be delivered in partnership with Glasgow Life.
The project "Cultural Heritage and Ancestral Tourism: reclaiming Scottish identity from "Highlandisation" seeks to explore the understanding of "Scottishness" amongst inbound "ancestral" visitors and the capacity of Glasgow Life's collections and attractions to develop offerings which might support more structured, focused interest amongst inbound visitors in the 'Glasgow' dimension of their family histories. The project will be supervised by Dr Alexander and Dr Bryce with additional, supervisory input from Dr Martin Bellamy and Susan Deighan from Glasgow Life.
Dr Matthew Alexander also delivered a research seminar on 'Value Co-Creation and Tourism' to the Product and Service Innovation group at Warwick University on May 14.
Patrick MacHugh, currently in third year of the BA Business (Marketing and Business Enterprise) has been selected to play badminton for Team GB at the World University Games in Gwangju, July 3-14.
The World University Games, or the Universiade as it is also known, is an international sporting event organised by FISU (International University Sports Federation). Held under FISU's motto, 'Excellence in Mind and Body,' university students from around the world participate in this event to advance the development of education and culture, build friendship through sport, and honor sportsmanship. It is the largest multi-sport event after the Olympics.
Patrick combines studies and his sport thanks to part-time registration. He was part of Team Scotland in last year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Fellow Strathclyder Caitlin Pringle has also been named as part of Team GB for Gwangju.

Sergio Costa is one of three finalists for this global prize for the best entrepreneurship dissertation, the purpose of which is to recognise and honour outstanding doctoral research in the area of New Enterprise Development.
The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation has awarded Professor Alan Wilson of the Marketing Department a Daiwa Foundation Award of £7,000 towards the costs of: Support for Reciprocal UK-Japan visits by Professor Wilson and researchers from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and their research into the impact of delivering public services through self-service technologies on disconnected sectors of the population. Professor Wilson's application for funding was successful, despite the fact that only 28% of Daiwa Foundation Award applications received funding.
