Human Resource Management’s Brazilian links

staff and students of Strathclyde and Federal University of Goias during workshop in 2015

Dr Brian Garvey of the Department of Human Resource Management and Dr Paul Tuohy of Aerospace and Electrical Engineering were invited by the Brazilian Embassy for the UK to represent University of Strathclyde to staff of Scottish Universities, industry leaders and over 100 Brazilian students placed in Scotland through the Science without Borders programme on February 12.

The Seminar was the '1st Meeting of Brazilian Students and Researchers in Scotland' and Dr Garvey and Dr Tuohy were asked to share experiences and best practice in relation to establishing effective research partnerships between Scottish and Brazilian Universities. Their work had been supported by a Strathclyde Knowledge Exchange grant and the Newton Fund.  The event concluded with a Glasgow City Council civic ceremony in the City Chambers with university representatives and the Brazilian Higher Education ambassador, Eduardo dos Santos.

Dr Brian Garvey and Professor Paul Stewart, both of HRM, follow the success of the Newton Fund UK-Brazil Research project with a Researcher Links grant awarded by the British Council/FAPEG/Newton Fund. The grant of £42,000 will enable the researchers to bring together over 40 leading scientists from Brazil and UK to explore interdisciplinary solutions to distinct social challenges linked to new energy forms under the title,  'The expansion of new frontiers for renewable energy: effects, conflicts and alternatives for populations facing socio-environmental vulnerability'.

This builds upon previous work with partners at the Federal University of Goias, Brazil who signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Business School in 2015.
