Innovation in Glasgow with Strathclyde

The Institute for Future Cities is featuring in a new “Glasgow Innovates” exhibition at Kelvingrove Art Gallery, which launched on April 22.

“Glasgow Innovates”, a virtual and physical exhibition, is organised by the Glasgow Science Festival to celebrate the Scottish theme year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.  The Institute for Future Cities input into the project includes excerpts showcasing the Institute’s projects on urban health and crime, and how data can help to make cities of the future healthier, safer and more sustainable for us all.  The exhibition runs until late June 2016.

The Institute for Future Cities with colleagues from Computer Science (CIS) are also working with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and Glasgow City Council on a new project looking at predictive tourism.  The project will experiment with how Glasgow can use data to build a picture of visitors to Glasgow, and how technology can be used to feed this information to tourism businesses in the City.

Skyscanner data will be used with other data sets to ascertain information about who is coming to Glasgow and plug information into a city tourism dashboard, enabling tourism businesses to offer a targeted experience to the visitor and assist marketing.  This initial pilot phase of the project has recently been awarded funding of £54,750 by the DataLab.
