HRM department: success at international conference

Dr Kendra Briken, Chancellor’s fellow at the Department for Human Resource Management successfully co-organised the 34th International Labour Process Conference between April 4-6. Over 300 academics from 33 countries discussed, presented, and networked at the Social Sciences Centre in Berlin.

Colleagues from the department of HRM submitted papers and presented their research at this prestigious international event.

This year’s theme of “Working Revolutions – Revolutionising Work” was reflected in the opening panel. Moderated by Dr Kendra Briken, panelists from academia and trade unions discussed how changes from technological innovations and accelerated offshoring reconfigure global value chains, and how this affects work.

Together with former Strathclyde colleague Dr Kirsty Newsome (Sheffield), Professor Phil Taylor and Dr Kendra Briken elaborated on the global value chain and its labour process in retail centres.

Professor Patricia Findlay, Dr Colin Lindsay, and Rachelle Pascoe-Deslauriers successfully presented “A critical perspective on the European workplace innovation debate.” Professor Paul Stewart and Dr Brian Garvey presented their recent research on “Changing forms of corporate and labour organisation in Brazil’s biofuel sector” in this year’s special stream on Changing Labour in a Climate Change Era.

Professor Ian Cunningham and colleagues Dr Alina Baluch, (St Andrews) and Phil James (Middlesex University) gave insights into “Line Managers and Staff Commitment in Outsourced Social Care Work".

PhD students Chibouzo Ejiogu, Eva Jendro, Mairead Lynch, Chandrima Roy, and Douglas Young contributed to the PhD workshop and presented at the conference. Congratulations go to Mairead Lynch who won this year’s joint PhD best paper award for her work on “Between a rock and a hard place: managers on the front line of interactive service".
