A collaborative project between the Department of Management Science (Dr Matthew Revie, Dr Kerem Akartunali and Dr Euan Barlow) and the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering (Professor Sandy Day and Dr Evangelos Boulougouris) has been shortlisted as a finalist for the European Association of Operational Research Society (EURO) Excellence in Practice Award.
The purposes of this competition are to recognise outstanding accomplishments in the practice of Operational Research and to promote the practice of Operational Research in general. As finalists, the team have been invited to present this work at a special session of the EURO 2016 conference in July, the premier European conference for Operational Research and Management Science.
The submitted work was delivered through the Low Carbon Power and Energy research theme within the Technology & Innovation Centre, and involved close collaboration with engineers and project managers from Scottish Power Renewables and SSE Renewables. This 16 month project aimed to design, develop and implement customised decision support tools for developers of offshore wind farms. These tools enable end users to identify and exploit enhanced logistical installation decisions, by efficiently assessing and analysing the technical and economic implications of potential scenarios, and by optimising the planning and scheduling of short- and long-term operations. A key component of the submission was the support from industrial partners demonstrating the significant impact of this work, which has ultimately culminated in the ongoing deployment of the developed tools to support installation decisions for the Beatrice offshore wind farm.
