Strathclyde Institute for Operations Management event success

Strathclyde Institute for Operations Management (SIOM) aims to provide a forum for academics, industry, policy makers and intermediaries to share best practice in Operations Management and to lead thinking.

SIOM is a collaborative partnership between the Faculty of Engineering and Strathclyde Business School. In addition to academics from SBS and Engineering, the core team includes representation from the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service (SMAS), the Scottish Institute for Remanufacture (SIR) and the High Speed Sustainable Manufacturing Institute (HSSMI).

With over 150 registered attendees (mostly from industry), October 13 saw a sell-out SIOM showcase event in the TIC. Funded by the University's Strategic KE fund, the purpose of the event was to promote the new vision and direction of SIOM.

The event focused on lessons relating to the manufacturing sector on three themes tailored to help facilitate the transition from a focus on low-cost to High Value Manufacturing: Productivity; Sustainable business models; and Leadership and culture change. Highlights included keynotes from Simon Cotton, CEO at Johnsons of Elgin and Ken Scott, Engineering Director at Alexander Dennis. Three interactive workshops focused on: Productivity through Entrepreneurship (Professor Johnathan Levie); Operations Management for Digital Manufacturing (HSSMI); and Sustainable Business Models (SIR).

Already the event has sparked conversations and plans for a series of exciting new collaborations. Feedback indicates a strong appetite for similar events in the future. SIOM hopes to hold less formal monthly events and another showcase event at the same time next year.
