Scottish Family Business Awards

The Herald Scottish Family Business Awards, held in association with Business Gateway, and sponsored by Strathclyde Business School, took place on December 7 in the Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow.

The event was hosted by Sanjeev Kohli and attended by over 320 guests who gathered at the Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow to hear keynote speaker Jeanette Forbes from the PCL Group and find out who had won.

The Outstanding Contribution Award, supported by Strathclyde Business School, was won by Dr Robert Graham and Grahams Family Dairy, for the valuable contribution he has made to the family business sector in Scotland.

Dr John Anderson, head of SME engagement at Strathclyde Business School and one of the judges, said, "Many congratulations to all the finalists who are fantastic representatives of the real wealth creators of Scotland. It was a great pleasure to have presented the award for outstanding contribution to Dr Robert Graham, chairman of one of Scotland's most successful family businesses - Graham's The Family Dairy - 70 years of dairy farming, innovating and creating prosperity."

The Awards recognise family-owned companies who make impressive contributions to the economy at home and abroad, as well as in their local communities.

Now in its fifth year, there are 11 categories in the 2016 awards, ranging from fastest-growing to the family business of the year, and the awards seek to recognise excellence in areas such as innovation, community engagement, environmental practice and overseas success.

John Anderson noted, "From our work as one of the UK's largest family business research teams we know that family businesses make a significant contribution to the Scottish Economy and we are committed to raising the profile of this vital sector with the Scottish Government and its agencies with hard evidence.

"The Herald Scottish Family Business Awards provide the ultimate showcase of why this is arguably the most important part of the Scottish economy. We are delighted to be able to highlight Scotland's successful role models."

Awards also went to Di Maggio's Restaurant Group, Anderson Maguire Funeral Directors, Campbell & Kennedy, Douglas Laing & Co, RP Adam (Arpal Group), Scotlight Group, Elan Hair Design, Hutton Stone Co Ltd, and Gleaner Oils. A report on the night is available here
