The Fraser of Allander Institute, Department of Economics, has been successful in securing funding for two work packages as part of a new Economics Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE) funded by the Office for National Statistics.
The new Centre brings together leading academics from across the UK, and indeed beyond, to improve the range and quality of economic statistics that are available. It will provide ONS with research that addresses the challenges of measuring the modern economy, as recommended by Professor Sir Charlie Bean in his recent Independent Review of UK Economic Statistics.
One work package is led by Dr Katerina Lisenkova, working with colleagues Professor Graeme Roy and Professor Kim Swales, and is focussed on producing estimates of interregional trade flows within the UK using new sources of data.
The other work package involves Professor Gary Koop and Dr Stuart McIntyre (as well as Professor James Mitchell, Warwick), and is focussed on producing improved short term macroeconomic indicators for the UK regions. This is a two-year programme of research, and both work packages will be hiring new post-doctoral researchers to join their research teams.
