New course hones enterprise skills of Scottish graduates

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has teamed up with Strathclyde Business School to support the delivery of graduate and student placements.

The programme is part funded by HIE and the European Regional Development Fund and is managed by HIE in the Highlands and Islands.

The group of graduates are working on innovative placement projects with organisations across the region and will attend three-day residential training at Cromarty Arts Trust Old Brewery.

The course, delivered by Strathclyde's Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, enables the graduates from all fields to further tailor their expertise to a business environment.

The training is highly interactive and gives graduates practical experience in areas including pitching, negotiation and the use of business models which can be applied in their placement projects.

Martin Gannon, a teaching associate at the Hunter Centre, said, "The graduates taking part come from a range of backgrounds, both academically and now professionally. Some are working with social enterprises, which have additional social and cultural aims but face the same challenges as any other organisation."

Karla Sam-Sin, ScotGrad programme manager at HIE, said, "The training as part of the ScotGrad - Highlands and Islands programme offers valuable business skills training to help graduates and students by using real-time examples so participants can understand the challenges an organisation and their employees can face.

"The training is also designed to help participants create and develop their own business support network, regardless of whether their placement is in Kintyre, Stornoway or Unst, as many of the graduates and students continue to keep in touch long after their ScotGrad placement has been completed."

Graduates who attended the previous programme have said that the training improved their confidence to sell ideas and products being developed, and some of them plan to use the pitching and sales elements in their role and marketing plan.
