Workshop on wind energy

Strathclyde's Electronic & Electrical Engineering (EEE) and Management Science departments led a workshop at Romax Technologies Ltd in Nottingham as part of a £160,000 InnovateUK grant on lowering the cost of wind energy.

EEE researcher Dr Jethro Browell presented his recent work on real options theory to aid major component replacement decisions, working closely with project partners from Romax Insight, Scottish Power Renewables, SSE and Datalytics.

The next phase of the project will see the theories developed by EEE and Management Science rolled out to multiple industrial applications including blade lift, major bearing replacements, and management of 3rd party servicing for wind farms.

Dr Matthew Revie, Management Science department, said, "The project to date has been a huge success, bringing together data management and processing experience in Datalytics, the contextual knowledge of Romax Insight, Scottish Power Renewables and SSE, and the decision analysis tools developed at Strathclyde. The tools being developed have huge potential for being commercialised post-project and used to significantly reduce the cost of wind energy in the UK."
