Students travel to US for entrepreneurial competition

A group of students from the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship took part in an American social entrepreneurial business challenge on April 20 and 21.

TCU's Values and Ventures Competition sees students from around the world pitch their idea for a business that makes a difference while making a profit.

The Strathclyde team - students Sultan Orec, Darius Pautrat, Paul Jardel, Perti Rijnberg, and Ruth McLaren - was the only Scottish team out of a total of 51 which came from the US, Candad, Cortia and Bangladesh. They were competing for more than $70,000 in cash prizes to make their idea a reality, thanks to TCU's Richards Barrentine Values and Ventures Competition.

The Strathclyde student team's business idea "U-Turn" is for a smart mattress topper and app-integrated product with technology that will help people with mobility issues.

All students had to present a plan for a for-profit business that benefits the community, environment or a specific population.

While this year's team of students did not win the competition, they were delighted to have taken part in what is a valuable learning experience.
