Strathclyde Business School launches taster MBA online course

Strathclyde Business School is launching an online course to give people a taste of its well-established Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.

The new course, Understanding Information and Technology Today, is the first online-only course containing core content from Strathclyde's triple-accredited MBA.

Created by academic Viktor Dorfler at Strathclyde Business School and developed with assistance from colleagues in Education Enhancement, the five-week course is offered in partnership with the social learning platform, FutureLearn, and was launched on May 22.

Dr Dörfler, of the School's Management Science Department, said, "We've taken one of our most popular MBA elective classes and recreated it for a mass audience online. Technology affects our everyday lives, and in business, it's important to understand, what to use and when for the most-effective results.

"The course is aimed at anyone who uses technology looking to gain a better understanding of what should and shouldn't be left to technology. It will provide participants with an overview of information system strategies as an aspect of corporate objectives, cloud-computing, smart technologies and the possibilities and consequences of artificial intelligence."

Stephen Somerville, Director of Business Development at FutureLearn, said, "Technology is impacting our lives and the business world faster than at any other point in history. It is fantastic that Strathclyde have highlighted this evolution in their course, helping learners keep up with the pace of change, and providing the opportunity to access content from their accredited degree."

Using video, quizzes and discussion forums, the course examines the 'big picture' of technology, to provide a better understanding of what computers can do for business. It covers some of the fundamental concepts of technology and information systems to help develop a context for the technologies people encounter daily, as well as providing learners with an understanding of the changes in the technology landscape.

As with all FutureLearn courses, learners will be able to take the courses for free or upgrade for a fee to receive additional benefits.
