Masters students deliver consultancy to local businesses

Students from Strathclyde Business School's MBM (Masters in Business Management), MIM (Masters in International Management) and PMI (Project Management and Innovation) programmes took part in a postgraduate class called Consulting in Practice (CiP) led by Dr Aylin Ates, Dr Kathryn Thory and Marina Livingston.

The CiP class provides students with the opportunity to deploy many aspects of their learning by engaging with a live issue provided by a client company.

This year’s clients were Maxwell Bruce, a successful recruitment consultancy; Fishers Group, a large hotels services company; and Tribe Yoga, a successful start-up firm based in Edinburgh.

The CiP class also included a guest speaker session delivered by Tom Gaunt, Director at BTS Consulting based in London.

MSc Project Management & Innovation student, Marina de Campos Lima Mendes who worked on Fishers client brief said, “Now I realise I made the right decision to pursue my Masters at Strathclyde Business School. My last module for the MSc Project Management and Innovation was a real life consulting experience and today we had the opportunity to present our recommendations to a real client.

"For this module, all students were placed into groups and we received a client with a real life business. We had only ten days to analyse the situation involving real issues and real people, and suggest areas for improvement and recommendations. Throughout my studies, I had never done a task so real and practical in university and it was such a great experience. I'm so grateful to Strathclyde for giving me this amazing and enriching opportunity, and also to my colleagues working with me as we had an intense ten days together."

CEO Roddy Donaldson and Industrial Manager Gordon Coyle of Maxwell Bruce praised the final presentations. Mr Coyle said, “The three strategies presented were first class. The winning presentation was informative, well presented and provided valuable information that will greatly assist Maxwell Bruce in new ventures.”
