Breaking Barriers programme wins at Diversity Awards

The Strathclyde Business School programme Breaking Barriers won the Youth Employment Award at The Herald Diversity Awards which took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow on October 11.

Breaking Barriers is an innovative partnership between ENABLE Scotland, the University of Strathclyde Business School and ScottishPower which means young people who have learning disabilities can attend a leading business school in the UK, achieve an accredited qualification, and gain real work experience with one of the largest employers in Scotland.

Students completed classes in Applied Business Skills at Strathclyde Business School, including modules in Digital Marketing and Social Media, Working with People and Customer Service. They then took part in a work placement at ScottishPower, which consisted of on-site work experience and off-site reflections on their performance and practical learning.

Students will receive their Certificate in Applied Business Skills as part of Strathclyde Business School's graduation ceremony in November.

Executive Dean of SBS Professor David Hillier said, "It is wonderful recognition for all those who worked tirelessly to get the programme off the ground and delivered successfully in collaboration with ENABLE Scotland and ScottishPower.

"The student learners will be graduating on November 8 at Strathclyde's degree congregations, and I'm certain it will be a fantastic experience for everyone."

The second cohort of the Breaking Barriers programme is also just about to start, with up to 15 new student learners and there are two new corporate partners participating, namely Santander and The Marriott.

The Herald and GenAnalytics national Diversity Awards in association with Standard Life Aberdeen recognise the outstanding success of companies and organisations, individuals, third sector organisations and community groups who are making a difference to communities across Scotland. Four hundred guests attended the awards ceremony which aimed to showcase people and companies putting diversity and inclusion at the heart of their operations.
