The Department of Economics and Fraser of Allander Institute are delighted to announce a new partnership with the National Bank of Rwanda. The partnership – in addition to developing research links between the two institutions – will provide postgraduate study opportunities on the MSc in Applied Economics at Strathclyde Business School for staff working in the National Bank of Rwanda.
The partnership has led to the establishment of the “Sam Baker Scholarship”, launched in 2019 in memory of a former employee of the Bank and an alumnus of the Department of Economics at Strathclyde.
Hoziane Amen, the first recipient of this award, is pictured alongside FAI Director Graeme Roy. She said, “I am delighted to have been the first recipient of the Sam Baker Scholarship. Sam was an amazing friend and co-worker.
"I am grateful to the National Bank of Rwanda, the Department of Economics and the Fraser of Allander Institute for this opportunity. It has been a great experience to learn from the great professors here at Strathclyde University. The mix of courses offered in the programme will equip me with a range of skills that I will be taking home and using in my daily work as an Economist in the Monetary Policy department at the National Bank of Rwanda."
The award provides an opportunity for a member of the Central Bank of Rwanda to study at Strathclyde Business School with the aim of developing their expertise in applied economics.
Graeme Roy, Head of Department of Economics and Director of the Fraser of Allander, said, “We are delighted to work with colleagues at the National Bank of Rwanda on this new partnership. We are particularly pleased to have the support of the Business School to offer an annual ‘Sam Baker Scholarship’ to economists working at the Central Bank. Sam was an outstanding and inspirational student who had a major impact not just within the Strathclyde student community but also in the organisations that he worked for, including in Rwanda.
"Our programmes are becoming increasingly international and this helps to make the learning experience for all our students much richer.
"The recipient of the second Sam Baker Scholarship will be announced in the next few months and we look forward to welcoming the next student onto our programme in the autumn.”
