SBS staff feature in Strathclyde Medals Ceremony

Eighteen individuals and eight teams at Strathclyde have had their outstanding service recognised at a virtual Strathclyde Medals Ceremony on Monday October 5, hosted by Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Jim McDonald.

The awards have been made to people and teams, nominated by their peers and colleagues, for demonstrating the University Values – People-Oriented, Bold, Innovative, Collaborative and Ambitious – in their work, relationships and achievements.

Sir Jim said, “This is our sixth annual Values Medal ceremony and we wanted to look particularly at those individuals and teams that exemplified the Values in the process of responding to the COVID-19 emergency.

“I am delighted to say that we received a record number of nominations - 82 individual and 36 teams – all of whom should take pride in being nominated by their colleagues. It was with great pride that I was able to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of all the Medal awardees.

"They come from across the entire university, in every staff category with a common feature in all – they exemplify the values of the Strathclyde community.”

Within the Business School, Senior Faculty Administrator David Somerville and Management Science Programme Administrator Pamela Leckenby received medals.

David, who has worked at Strathclyde for 24 years, the majority of that at the Business School, was nominated for his work on the accreditation of the business school, as well as being a huge champion of mental health and wellbeing at work. David made sure that in lockdown, when people were feeling isolated, that they remained connected - he reached out to colleagues and created a team spirit with his regular vlogs. What started out as a bit of fun grew to 40 episodes and a YouTube channel with nearly 10,000 views.

David said, “I was delighted and surprised to hear I was getting a Strathclyde Values Medal. It’s humbling that colleagues took the time to nominate me. The part I'm most proud about is my vlog. All I wanted to do was give my colleagues a giggle to lift their spirits each day during lockdown in the best way I could – humour! - so to be rewarded for this, by them, means a great deal to me.”

Pamela said, “I was nominated by five of my academic colleagues for being an ‘outstanding and dedicated member of the team’. I was shocked and honoured to be nominated and to receive the medal for my contributions to the Department, and University.”

Pamela, who has worked in the University for eight years, started off as a modern apprentice in NAOME, moving to Management Science within SBS in 2016.

As well as congratulating the individuals and teams nominated by their colleagues receiving awards, the Principal dedicated a Special Award to Estates Teams who have been on campus during lockdown.

Sir Jim added, “It is important for myself and the Executive Team to recognise a bigger community of those that have been critical in maintaining and carrying out essential work on campus throughout lockdown.”
