The annual Teaching Excellence Awards (TEAs) are student-led teaching awards hosted by Strathclyde Union’s Vice President Education to recognise the best of Strathclyde's teaching staff. Being student-led means it is solely students who nominate, shortlist and pick the winners, with Union staff overseeing the process.
This year’s award took place virtually on May 13 and saw several Business School staff nominated across different categories.
Teaching assistant Shivani Tandon, Accounting and Finance, was short-listed in the ‘Teaching Assistant/Tutor’ category
In the ‘Best in Faculty’ award, James Bowden, Department of Accounting and Finance, Tom Bourkel, Department of Work, Employment and Organisation (WEO) and Phil Taylor (WEO) were all nominated, with Tom Bourkel being named overall winner for the Business School.
Tom was also shortlisted in the ‘Enthusiasm’ category - this category highlights the most enthusiastic teaching staff who shows incredible passion for their subject areas, as well as bringing their course to life - and the ‘Student Community Award’ which is a new award recognising staff who have gone out of their way to help students, both new and old, near or far, to feel a part of the Strathclyde community. Most gratifyingly, Tom was shortlisted in the ‘Best overall’ category which was to find the lecturer who has provided unequivocal support throughout this difficult year.
Tom said, “I feel very privileged to be able to share my experiences and knowledge with such an extraordinary bunch of curious minds here at Strathclyde. While the award might recognise my ‘excellence in teaching’, my passion and dedication, in the end, is a reflection of the student’s commitment, as well as the support and hard work of those I work with.”
