WEO researchers host Nuffield Research Placement student

Dr Daria Luchinskaya and Dr Pauline Anderson (Department of Work, Employment and Organisation) organised and ran a student placement summer project as part of their ‘Graduating in a Pandemic’ research study with the University of Glasgow, through the Nuffield Research Placement programme.

The ‘Graduating in a Pandemic’ study investigates graduates’ transitions from education to work or to other activities in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The prestigious Nuffield Research Placement programme provides students in their penultimate year of school the opportunity to undertake hands-on research projects and make a meaningful contribution towards the work of a host organisation. Daria and Pauline submitted an opportunity for a student to work on their Graduating in a Pandemic project and were delighted to host placement student Sameer Baig over July and August 2021.

Sameer conducted a piece of research about graduates' experiences of transitions to work, looking at relevant literature and at our survey data. Working together with Daria and Pauline, as well as with Andrew Dorrance (student intern at the University of Glasgow), Sameer developed skills in research and data management, coding and analysis, and received training in using R via RStudio Cloud. As part of his placement, Sameer produced a report and poster focusing on factors that might benefit or hinder graduates’ job search and career goals, and examining the role of respondents’ socio-economic background.

Daria and Pauline said, “We really enjoyed working with Sameer this summer and look forward to hosting another Nuffield Student Placement in the future.”
