RRBM Dare to Care dissertation scholarship award for Strathclyde researcher

Afsa Mukasa, a third year Doctoral Researcher at the Hunter Center for Entrepreneurship (HCE), under the Socially Progressive Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre for Doctoral Training (SPEI CDT), has been awarded a Responsible Research in Business and Management (RRBM) ‘Dare to Care’ dissertation scholarship.

Afsa is one of eight inaugural winners of the RRBM scholarships which are awarded in recognition of proposals that put emphasis on an ecosystem approach while promoting equality and diversity in today's global society

Afsa reports that she was not expecting the award which came to her attention via an emailed congratulatory message from Professor Dean Shepherd, a well-known and highly respected academic and author.

This year’s scholarship programme focused on topics related to economic inequality, racial, gender or other forms of social justice in organisations, thereby contributing to meeting one or more of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. This year’s winners were selected from among more than 80 applications. Applications were evaluated by a committee composed of senior scholar winners of the responsible research award and accomplished professors who support the principles of responsible research

Explaining about her research, Afsa said, “My research - "How do ties or gaps between indigenous micro-entrepreneurs and Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) support or deter entrepreneurship?" - lays emphasis on moving away from single narratives or top down mechanisms and instead tries to address the question from a local standpoint: infusing normativity and ethnocentricity into the discussion.

“Particular focus is also built upon evidencing how research findings will be broadly disseminated to practitioners and policy makers, as well as through the use of open source platforms: in order to ensure tangible results after the research process has been completed.”

She added, “I wish to thank my supervisors and the HCE team as well as the overall Strathclyde Business School for the support rendered to doctoral researchers, in particular Professor Peter McKiernan - a co-founder of RRBM - who also mentored me and others during the EURAM 2021 annual conference.

“I am grateful for this recognition and look forward to delivering quality research that aligns with the 7 principles of RRBM.”
