Fundraising to Celebrate 50 Years

Three charities have been announced for the Department of Marketing’s 50th Anniversary Charity Fundraiser: Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH); Trussel Trust; and Prince’s Trust.

These charities reflect the ethos of the department and the people-orientated and socially progressive values of the university. Teaching Associate, Dr Jane Johnstone, said, “We are so proud of reaching the remarkable milestone of 50 years and we want to give something back as we mark our Golden Anniversary”.

Donations are invited from friends, colleagues and students throughout the business school and the wider university. You can read more about the charities, make a donation or keep up to date with fundraising events via the webpage.

Marketing guest speaker event

The third year Undergraduate Marketing students on the Strategic Marketing in an International Context class were pleased to welcome Kevin McCole, Managing Director of the UK India Business Council to their lecture as a guest speaker on February 25.

What was marketed to Kevin as a 20–30-minute presentation with some questions turned into an hour and a half of valuable international and global expansion plans with in-depth case studies on JCB and Pavers Shoes and their approach to the India market with very different profiles for each of these UK based companies.

This session was incredibly useful for attending students who were in the middle of their individual and group assignments which looked at the evolution of entry modes and how organisations selected and developed their global expansion plans.

Kevin was treated to a number of high quality questions from the student panel and said that this was good training for his next meeting with a Indian newspaper journalist

Kevin has a wealth of international experience having joined the UK India Business Council after 19 years in the UK’s Diplomatic Service, where he served in the Netherlands, Malta, Romania, India, and various London postings.

In India, Kevin spent three years at the British Deputy High Commission in Kolkata helping UK businesses win contracts and find partners in Eastern India and assisting Indian companies expand into the UK.

On completion of the session Kevin also expressed an interest in working with the University on some marketing related challenges and was keen to return as a guest speaker for the Marketing Department.

Upcoming PrOPEL events

Peak Scientific is a leading innovator in the design, manufacture and support of high performance gas generators for analytical laboratories. Head-quartered in Glasgow, Peak Scientific has a significant local presence on every continent with 20 overseas offices and employs more than 650 people worldwide. That means empowering people across teams to lead and innovate.

In this ESRC PrOPEL Hub and InterAct Masterclass, founder and Chairman Robin MacGeachy will share insights on how Peak Scientific has embraced organisational transformation, shifting from a centralised engineering department to a distributed model where multiple work groups and teams are empowered to collaborate and drive innovation.

On May 5 an ESRC PrOPEL Hub and ESRC InterAct Project Webinar entitled “Navigating uncertainty: How HRM dynamic capabilities contribute to organizational well-being and performance” will take place from 1.30-2.30pm

Dynamic capabilities represent a debated academic topic: researchers disagree on capabilities’ definition, characteristics and boundaries. However, there is much less disagreement about their existence. This keynote webinar will look at how to apply the knowledge and research evidence on dynamic capabilities to HRM by defining ‘HRM dynamic capabilities’ and the mechanisms by which they affect organisational resources and practices, employee well-being and performance. Researching and understanding HRM dynamic capabilities can help organisations navigate uncertainty and prepare their workforce for challenges such as labour shortages and hybrid work models to environmental uncertainties such as inequality, sustainability and artificial intelligence.
