HR awards success for Strathclyde graduates

Sarah Lawson at the awards

HRM graduate Sarah Lawson won the HR Graduate of the Year award at the Hr Network National Awards 2022, making it the second year in a row that a Strathclyde graduate has won HR Graduate of the Year at the prestigious event.

The Hr Network National Awards 2022, held in partnership with the Roffey Park Institute, took place on November 10 with over 700 guests attending. The awards recognise, acknowledge and reward the champions of the Scottish HR profession flagship event for HR professionals across the whole of Scotland and were once again hosted by radio & TV presenter and broadcaster Stephen Jardine.

Overall, it was a very successful night for the Department of Work, Employment and Organisation - three 2020/21 graduates were shortlisted for the HR Graduate of the Year Award: Hannah Yule, Rona MacKenzie and Sarah Lawson, with Sarah being announced as winner in this category.

Sarah - now working for Scottish Water - said, "I am so delighted to have won HR Graduate of the year at this year’s Hr Network Awards! I still can’t quite believe it and I am so grateful to everyone at Strathclyde Business School who have supported me throughout both my Masters’ degree (MSc Human Resource Management) and my undergraduate degree (BA (Hons) International Business with HRM).

"I want to say a special thank you to Karen Morrison and my dissertation supervisor, Ian Cunningham, for nominating me for this award, which truly could not have been achieved without either of them.

"My fellow nominees and friends, Rona MacKenzie and Hannah Yule, were just as deserving to receive this award and I was really pleased to be able to share the night with them.

"It was also fantastic to see some of my past lecturers, Dennis Nickson and Joanna Butler - whom I met for the first time in person at the event - alongside my undergraduate supervisor Tasos Hadjisolomou. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners; it was a fantastic night that I doubt I will forget easily!"

Another win for a Strathclyde graduate was Kevin Staunton, Head of HR at Turning Point Scotland for winning HR Director of the Year. Kevin graduated from our part-time MSc HRM in 2019.

Ian Cunningham Head of the Department of Work, Employment and Organisation, said, “We’re delighted to see Sarah walk off with the HR Graduate of the Year Award – seeing a Strathclyde student get this prestigious award for the second year running is fantastic and we’re so pleased that all three of the graduates shortlisted were from Strathclyde.

“We were also very happy to see Kevin – another Strathclyde graduate - win HR Director of the Year. It was a great night for Strathclyde and our HRM programmes.”
