Dr Biwesh Neupane

The Academy of Social Sciences launched a new project to foreground the social sciences in informing policies across the political spectrum and showcasing research evidence relevant to public policy last year in advance of a likely UK General Election this year.

Election 24: ideas for change based on social science evidence, draws on the expertise of distinguished social scientists, many of whom are Fellows of the Academy, to identify positive and constructive policy suggestions on many key policy areas including the cost-of-living crisis; climate change and living standards; health and social care; immigration; and higher education, amongst others.

A new ‘Election 24 hub’ pulls together a range of comment pieces from Academy Fellows and other social scientists on many key themes. The latest commentary is from Dr Biwesh Neupane, Senior Lecturer in Finance, Strathclyde Chancellor’s Fellow, Department of Accounting and Finance, together with colleagues Professor Hisham Farag and Professor Santosh Koirala, University of Birmingham.

New book edited by Professor Tom Baum

Professor Tom Baum, Department of Work, Employment and Organisation, is joint editor of a book just published by Routledge, A Sustainable Tourism Workforce: Current issues.

Photo of Tom

Professor Tom Baum

He worked on this project with Shelagh Mooney (Auckland University of Technology), Richard Robinson (Northumbria University and the University of Queensland) and David Solnet (University of Queensland).

This book brings together issues of social justice and the neglect of a sustainable orientation to the tourism workforce. This has resulted in an impoverished, unsustainable, and transient workforce that does not meet the aims of UN sustainable goals within the sector or indeed the UNTWO Code of ethics towards its employees.

The introductory review and 15 chapters in this volume each make a unique and distinct contribution to knowledge. The opening review presents a critique of current definitions of sustainability in an employment, and specifically in a tourism employment context, acknowledging and critiquing extant literature. Additionally, the introductory review offers concluding remarks that the authors hope will influence and guide future research endeavours.

The book is aimed at educators, students and policymakers interested in information and guidance on managing sustainable tourism. Several chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

Details of the book can be found here A Sustainable Tourism Workforce: Current issues - 1st Edition - Shelag (routledge.com)

Department of Marketing welcomes guest speakers

The Department of Marketing has welcomed a range of diverse guest speakers for the 3rd Year ‘Strategic Marketing in an International Context’ class. Collaborating with class coordinator Michelle Fisher, each speaker provides an interesting internally-focused case study for students.

UK India Business Council (UKIBC) Managing Director, Kevin McCole has been a regular guest speaker for the past three years and gives an interesting context to developing business links in India for UK businesses as well as hosting delegations from India for partnership development with UK businesses. Kevin discusses the different approaches some organisations, including JCB, Pavers and MG, have to internationalisation.

Scottish Enterprise, Senior Marketing Manager, Rob Catterson has been involved as a guest speaker on this class for the past two years. Rob is responsible for Brand Scotland and provides a detailed insight into global marketing from the context of a government agency, looking at the development and execution of the strategy and advocacy of branding a country.

The class benefits from the esteem of the guest speakers and the ability for students to contextualise theoretical underpinning to real life examples. Guests answer a series of enlightened and intelligent questions from the students, whilst students demonstrate interest in further career development and internships with the companies represented.

New Women Entrepreneurship Research Club

The Women Entrepreneurship Reading Group at the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship aims to give students and researchers access to rich discussions as well as insight into exciting current research being undertaken.

The Women Entrepreneurship Reading Club intends to be a platform dedicated to fostering knowledge exchange and discussions among PhD students and junior researchers interested in the field of women entrepreneurship.

Over the past years, research on women entrepreneurs has gained significant popularity and relevance. The club’s aim is to investigate the experiences, challenges, and achievements of female entrepreneurs, as well as the wider socio-economic impact of their businesses. This field of research not only encourages self-reliance but also plays a role in enhancing society by illuminating the unique perspectives and contributions of women entrepreneurs.

The sessions predominantly cover different aspects of Gender and Entrepreneurship, Women's Economic Empowerment, Intersectionality and Diversity, Institutional and Policy Environment as well as Entrepreneurial Strategies and Success Factors. The field is dynamic and evolving, with ongoing research and discussions aiming to deepen the understanding of the unique challenges, opportunities, and contributions of women in the entrepreneurial landscape.

Through regular meetings, participants will explore cutting-edge research papers, explore emerging trends, and foster critical thinking. By actively participating in this collaborative effort, members will have the opportunity to expand their network, exchange ideas, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in women entrepreneurship.

Each session will be delivered by a PhD researcher or academic, chaired by the convenor, Nasreen Hasan. The format of the reading group is flexible and can be adapted based on the preferences of each researcher.

Speakers will often provide some preparatory reading materials for attendees and members will most likely find that they get more out of the reading group sessions if they have been able to spend a little time with the materials prior to the session.

This collaborative initiative is led by PhD students from the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, focusing on this specific field. If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please email us at Nasreen.hasan@strath.ac.uk. The group is open to anyone, including staff and students from Strathclyde and beyond, as we believe diverse perspectives fuel innovation and drive transformative change.
