Cabin fever: family business graduates return to share start up experience

Daniel and Adam Jack are cousins who both studied at Strathclyde Business School and recently returned to SBS to give a talk in the family business module run by the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship. They shared with the class the story of how they set up the business once Daniel, the younger of the cousins, graduated.

The cousins have set up Jacks Al-Stays, a tourism business which launched with five bespoke self-catering cabins on the island of Millport off the west coast of Scotland.

In the first year of trading, Daniel says they have exceeded all expectations and the Jacks also managed to scoop some awards - in November 2023 they took home a Scottish EDGE main category prize of £90k then they received the news they were to receive a VisitScotland Thistle Award for ‘The Best Self Catering Accommodation Experience’ in the West of Scotland region.

Daniel wrote a blog post on the business start up for our Strathclyde Business School blog and how what they learned at Strathclyde has all been used practically in the setting up of their business. The post can be read on the webpage: https://www.sbs.strath.ac.uk/blogs/SBS/post.aspx?id=1569
