Department of Marketing success at Academy of Marketing 2024

The Department of Marketing enjoyed tremendous success at the Academy of Marketing’s Annual Conference 2024 at Cardiff University.

Congratulations go to Sara Al-Lawati and Dr Keith Pyper who won the AM2024 Best Innovative Paper for their work entitled: ‘Betwixt and Between’ the Football Pitch: Liminality in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar - A CCT Perspective. This prize was sponsored by the Marketing Trust.

Following on from grant successes in 2023, the Department was delighted to win another prestigious AMRC Research Grant. Many congratulations go to Dr Andrew Davis for his award-winning grant application: “The internal marketing challenge of engendering sustainability practices.”

Departmental colleagues also presented their AM2023 award-winning research:

  • Michelle Fisher and Michael Harker presented their work resulting from their Pedagogic Research Grant entitled “Effective use of digital technologies and pedagogies to support marketing education: An evidence-based case study of current 3rd year Marketing Students and their experience of online/hybrid learning 2020-2023.”
  • Andrea Tonner presented her work based on her AMRC Research Grant entitled “Beyond the Digital Divide: exploring digital experiences of consumers with learning disabilities.”

The Department was very well represented throughout the conference, presenting nine research papers. Dr Keith Pyper, Dr Paul Hewer, Dr Andrea Tonner, Dr Matthew Alexander, Dr Andrew Davis, Dr Michael Harker, Michelle Fisher, Professor Kathy Hamilton and Professor Anne Marie Doherty, all had papers included in the main conference. Special congratulations go to Nada Ghesh, Lucina Odoi and Nawalage Hirudini Kaushalya Cooray, doctoral students in the Department, who presented their research at the main conference. The Department was also well represented at the Doctoral Colloquium, with Tiholohelo Lekoro and İrem Tastan both presenting their PhD research projects.

Jointly sponsored by the Department of Marketing and the Academy of Marketing, the Professor Michael J. Baker Thesis Awards were presented at the AM2024 Gala Dinner by Professor Iain Davies. The winning theses were undertaken at the University of Limerick, Ireland, Université Paris Dauphine – PSL, France and the University of Vienna, Austria.

At the AGM, chaired by the outgoing Chair of the Academy Professor Anne Marie Doherty, Professor Iain Davies was appointed as Chair the Academy of Marketing Research Sub-Committee. Professor Doherty was appointed as Vice-President of the Academy.

At the Gala Dinner Professor Doherty was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award and Fellowship. In recognition of extraordinary and distinguished services to the Academy, the Academy of Marketing proclaimed Professor Doherty Fellow of the Academy of Marketing and Life Member of the Academy of Marketing.


In the July 2024 issue
