SBS is top in Scotland, top 5 in UK for business research income: CABS analysis
Strathclyde Business School (SBS) has achieved the highest research income among Scottish business schools and secured a top-five position nationally, according to the latest analysis by the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS).
The CABS Research Income for Business and Management 2025 report, which analysed Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) finance records data from 2012/13 to 2022/23, places SBS fifth in the UK based on research income. Notably, SBS is the only Scottish business school to feature in the top 20.
SBS generated £4.4M in research income for 2022/23, contributing to a total of £29.1M income for the University over an 11-year period (2012/13 - 2022/23) through research grants and funding.
Professor David Hillier, Executive Dean of Strathclyde Business School, attributes this success to the academic team’s commitment to innovative and impactful research. “Our position as top in Scotland and fifth in the UK reflects our dedication to collaborative, cross-disciplinary research that attracts substantial funding,” he said. “Our academics regularly partner with institutions across the UK and internationally, as well as public and private organisations, to conduct research that delivers real-world impact.”
Professor John Quigley, Vice Dean (Research), emphasised how this achievement demonstrates the school’s strong engagement with stakeholders across sectors. “Our research directly addresses pressing business and societal challenges. This work not only advances knowledge in these areas but also enriches our teaching at all levels, creating a dynamic learning environment for our students.”
